New Reading on Leadership: Leadership in NOT better than Management

John Kotter, the scholar at Harvard Business School , wrote an interesting article  titled: “What Leadership Really Do”. He redefine the leadership by referring to the tasks that leaders should do, and consequetnly, the skills that the leader need. Before that, he rejected the idea that leadership is necessarily better than management or a replacement for it.

Rather, leadership and management are two distinctive and complementary systems. and both are necessary for success in an increasingly complex and volatile business environment.

As a result, for any organization seeks success, it is important to take into consideration that leadership without management skills is sometimes actually worse!

That explains the new trend of professional successful bodies to hire the manger-leader. Or to retrain its current skillful mangers, who have potential leadership, to be, also, leaders.

Hence, It’s expected that the leaders will be able to:

setting a direction while being able to plan and budget;

alignig people while being able to organize and staffing;

motivating people while being able to control and problem solving.

It is very interesting to be skillful manger and insightful leader at the same time, isn’t it?

  1. I agree! I’ve known some very good leaders and some very good managers; they have a different main focus but a lot of similar traits overall.

    Where do you think you fit in?
