Why do we consume media?

Today at Aaron Brown’s seminar I was reminded again that people don’t always consume media to be more informed. People want to be entertained, they want to hear what they already believe in and therefore they flock to the channels that preach what they want to hear.
Brown talked about how Fox and MSNBC are not in the converting business, they are in the reinforcing business. They don’t change opinions they reinforce them!

This ideas challenged me to the fact that as a journalist I need to be more informed about what both sides are saying if I am to have a more balanced view.

A friend once told me to be careful and not surround myself with friends that all think like me. He said, when you do that you stop growing as a person because you stop being challenged.
